Upcoming Reliance Jio Set-Top Box To Offer Console-Like Gaming And MR Experiences

At the 42nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), held on Monday (August 12), Reliance Jio announced that it will be rolling out the 4K Jio Set-Top Box (STB) that will offer entertainment and gaming services.

The upcoming device will be included with Jio GigaFiber connections, and it will accept the broadcast cable TV signals from local cable operators (LCOs). The biggest highlight of the Jio STB is that it will deliver console-like gaming using Jio GigaFiber service. Jio GigaFiber will launch commercially on September 5.

Once connected to your TV, the STB will work like an Android TV or Amazon FireTV stick. It will support Jio’s collection of apps, Android games and even game controllers. Apparently, it will not only support nearly all gaming controllers and has an in-built graphics card, but you will also be able to use your smartphone as a virtual controller. There’s more – the set top box will let you watch movies on the very first day of release. This feature can be availed from mid-2020.

While addressing the AGM, the RIL Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh D Ambani said, “Television service in India is a classic small-business success story where local cable operators or LCOs played a pioneering role. In recent years, competition from DTH operators has threatened the viability of nearly one lakh LCOs who still operate across India. As firm supporters of local and small businesses, Jio wanted to ensure that these LCOs continued to serve their communities.”

Directors of Reliance Jio Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani showcased the gaming capabilities of the Jio STB. They even gave a quick live demo of a game of FIFA 2019 on stage to showcase its multiplayer support.

Jio Set-Top box will also offer Mixed Reality experiences, providing users with shopping, education and entertainment. In order to avail the Mixed Reality services, users will be given the Microsoft HoloLens-based headset called Jio HoloBoard. Reliance Jio joined hands with a new startup called Tesseract to create this feature. Reports claim that the headset will be available very soon at an affordable price.

As mentioned above, Jio GigaFiber launches in September, which is when you will be able to get the Jio Set-Top Box free of cost, in case you go for the annual plan.
