September 2019 began with the leading Polish video games studio CD Projekt Red finally putting all speculations to rest, confirming that their next big open-world RPG experience Cyberpunk 2077 will certainly have a multiplayer mode, but not when it launches next year. It will be added sometime after the release. The company explained that once they are done releasing a series of planned free DLCs and additional single-player downloadable content, they will gear up to dish out some multiplayer action.
While the news certainly gave us gaming fans a real kick, it also left us with the burning question – exactly why won’t the multiplayer mode come alongside the role-playing title’s launch? Well, we all know that the project has been under development for nearly six years now, and hence, the query is pretty reasonable.
Max Pears, a level designer at CD Projekt Red, answered that in an interview with Video Games Chronicle (VGC) at the Tokyo Game Show 2019, “I can’t say too much on it because it’s still going through its process, but it’s about making sure that multiplayer fits in with the lore of the world and it feels right.”
“It’s about making sure it fits in with who we are as a company as well, because story is so important to us, plus it needs to fit in with how we design and deliver games,” he added.
Hinting that the mode could have ties to the game’s story, Pears underlined that it is utterly significant for the team to undergo the R&D process thoroughly in order to ensure that “it feels like a CD Projekt Red multiplayer that has our beliefs and design philosophy.”
“We’ve still got work going on and we’re hiring to make sure that we get the right people for the job. The main focus is still single-player right now and we’re making sure that people understand that this world is more than big enough for single-player,” Pears explained.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release on April 16, 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. A Google Stadia edition will follow at a later date. You can preorder the game on Amazon now.
